EMDR Trauma Therapy in Kent

EMDR Trauma Therapy

As a therapist, I've always been drawn to understanding how our past experiences shape the way we feel and respond in the present. Over time, I noticed that while talking therapy can bring insight and relief, some experiences leave an imprint that talking alone cannot fully address.

This led me to train in EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing). I have experienced it myself and seen how it can gently reduce the emotional impact of old patterns, emotional triggers and distressing memories. It felt like an essential addition to my practice, another way to help people move beyond what has been holding them back.

How EMDR Therapy Helps

EMDR is highly effective in treating post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and is used by the NHS, charities and the Ministry of Defence to help people heal from trauma.

EMDR is not only helpful for people with PTSD. It can also support people whose difficult or distressing experiences continue to affect how they feel, think or respond today.

These may include:

  • Childhood or developmental trauma

  • Anxiety or depression linked to past events

  • Phobias or fears that feel out of proportion

  • Grief or sudden loss

  • Accidents or medical trauma

  • Experiences of sexual, physical or emotional abuse

  • Times of social humiliation or deep embarrassment

  • Relationship difficulties and recurring emotional triggers

You do not need to remember every detail of what happened for EMDR to work. The process helps your brain reprocess and integrate experiences so they feel less present and more manageable.

What to Expect

The first part of EMDR focuses on building a sense of safety. These early sessions are usually 60 minutes.

After the initial sessions, we move into the reprocessing stages, also 60 minutes. Gentle eye movements, sounds or tapping help you stay connected to the present while processing past experiences, a process known as dual attention. You remain fully aware and in control throughout.

Over time, memories or feelings that once felt highly charged often begin to feel more neutral. Many people describe feeling calmer, lighter and less reactive as the work unfolds.

How It Differs from Talking Therapy

Talking therapy helps us understand and explore our experiences. EMDR offers another way of processing difficult experiences.

Rather than revisiting every detail or analysing events, EMDR allows your natural healing system to complete what it could not at the time. This can reduce the emotional weight of past experiences, creating space for greater balance and peace in the present.
